I am a nerd and been one pretty much my whole life! I hold a Ph.D. from the University of Florida, a PGDM from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and a B.Sc. (Honours) degree from Jadavpur University, India. Currently, I am The GlaxoSmithKline Chaired Professor in Corporate Innovation—Professor of Marketing at INSEAD and Founder and Program Director for the program Market Entry Strategies for India. I am a Fellow of the Institute on Asian Consumer Insights and the Ernst & Young Institute for Emerging Market Studies. Last but not least, I am a member of the board at the Association for Consumer Research.
I’ve spent my professional life working on the topics of branding and innovation, which I find are inextricably linked. Recently, my interest has turned to examining these two topics in the context of emerging markets. You can read more about that in my recently published book entitled The New Emerging Market Multinationals: Four Strategies for Disrupting Markets and Building Brands.
If you are interested in the more nerdy stuff I’ve written, you can find brief descriptions and links to most of my published papers on this website—beware, there are some 60 plus papers, mainly published in the leading international journals such as the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Psychology, Marketing Science, Management Science, International Journal of Research in Marketing, and Long Range Planning.
Aside from my own research, I am plugged in to what is going on in the world of marketing research in my role as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Consumer Psychology, an Area Editor for the International Journal of Research in Marketing, and as a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Consumer Research and Long Range Planning.
On the teaching front, I have taught about branding and innovation in degree courses as well as in executive programs in Europe, The Americas, Australia, Asia, and Africa. I also advise companies and serve on the advisory boards of several organizations.
